Eminent Bengali poet Shanka Ghosh took his last breath on Wednesday morning, days after testing COVID-19 positive. Ghosh, a recipient of Sahitya Akademi Awards was suffering from age-related problems for a while.

He was tested positive for COVID-19 on April 14 and was in home isolation. Sankha Ghosh belonged to the era of Bengali poets after the legendary Jibananda Das. He also spends several years teaching. He was associated with Various well-known Universities. Sankha Ghosh who was conferred with Padma Bhushan in 2011, was also received Sahitya Akademi Award in 1977 for his book ‘Babarer Prarthana’.

He won the same award for the second time in 1999. Some of Ghosh’s noted books are Adim Lata - Gulmomay' , 'Murkha Baro Samajik Nay'. Some of his books translated into various languages. Shankha Ghosh was born on February 6, 1932, at Chandpur in present-day Bangladesh. Chief Minister Mamta Banerjee expresses her condolences on his passing, saying “His death created a deep void in the society.” Home Affairs Minister Amit Shah, and West Bengal Governor Jagdeep Dhankhar also expressed their condolences.

Anguished to learn about the sad demise of a renowned Bengali poet and Sahitya Akademi Awardee, Shri Shankha Ghosh Ji. He will always be remembered for his outstanding poems, deeply rooted in the social context. My deepest condolences to his family and followers. Om Shanti!
